This project is an exploration of structures found in the inner ear through texture, composition, and colour. Zara draws on the inspiration she has gained from anatomical diagrams, models and the organic forms found in nature to create surreal landscapes influenced by the shapes inside of us.
‘I have always been fascinated by biology, and what goes on inside of our bodies. The beauty of our internal systems and their endless intricacies has always inspired me.
One particular system that catalysed this project is the inner workings of the human ear. I became engrossed by the mechanisms at play within us that enable us to hear sound. For example, the concha shape of the cochlea, the eardrum, the labyrinthine vestibules, and the organic forms of the middle ear bones are captivating. I love exploring how natural forms reappear and mimic one another, especially those found in plants and those found inside our bodies, such as the branches of a tree or the veins in a leaf- and our lungs, blood vessels and tendons’.
